When selecting an addiction treatment center for your specific needs, here are some things to keep in mind:
- What type of structure do they have in place?
- Do they require attendance of 12-step recovery meetings and if so, do they give you the option of choosing the fellowship of your choice such as: AA, NA, CA, etc?
- What is their policy on overnight passes? Do they they implement an initial restriction period for new guests?
- Does the monthly cost include anything more than just rent? Some sober living homes include basic food items, cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc within the monthly fees.
- Do they require mandatory drug/alcohol testing? Does the cost of the test come included within the monthly fees or do you have to pay additional to cover that cost?
- How much sobriety time do the managers and/or owners have?
- Is there ample parking available? For those using public transportation, how good are the nearby bus and/or train systems?
- What about work, school, outpatient treatment requirements? Some sober living homes require that your days are productive and spent out of the house by participating in work, education, outpatient treatment or even volunteering.
- Is there any type of policy regarding relapse?
You're NOT asking this because you want to know if you can get away with relapsing!!! You're asking this because, what if your roommate should happen to come home drunk one night? Are you going to have to sleep in the same room as someone that smells of alcohol. It is essential that the house management does whatever is necessary in order to protect the sobriety of the residents as well as the overall integrity of the house!
